It was built on a simplified Panzer III chassis with clean and interchangeable parts which made it easy to fix. Replacing the turret with a fixed casemate, it mounted a powerful 7.5cm StuK 40 L\/48 gun which could destroy almost any Allied tank except the IS Soviet tank and the Jumbo Sherman. With its low-profile, firepower, low cost and standardised production, StuG III transitioned from an infantry support vehicle to a formidable tank hunter across various theatres of war, including North Africa, Europe, and Russia. The Ausf. G was the final and main variant, with over 8,400 units produced from December 1942 to April 1945.
