      What Is a Diecast Model?

A diecast model is a collectible that is produced in a very specific way by putting molten, lead, zinc alloy of plastic in a mould. These collectibles were first developed in the early 20th century and were favoured as it was very easy for manufacturers to produce models en masse.

While the original diecast models usually took the form of cars, planes, and other vehicles, the range has since expanded to include a wider variety of products. These days, you can buy diecast models that include everything from Batman figurines to QANTAS planes.

What Is the Difference Between Metal and Diecast?

Metal and diecast are two common terms often used when talking about toys and model kits. While the two words are often used interchangeably, they don’t actually refer to the same thing.

Metal is an umbrella term for a number of related materials, including iron, stainless steel, and lead. Many toys and collectibles are made from a type of metal.

Diecast, on the other hand, refers to the method of shaping materials, typically with pressurised moulds, resulting in objects with considerable strength. Hobbyco sells both metal and plastic diecast models, which vary in terms of durability. These castings are then covered in another material, such as paint or chrome, giving them added protection from corrosion and a dash of life through colour.

Why Do People Collect Diecast Models?

Diecast models are a popular type of collectible in the world of hobbyists. People collect diecast models for a variety of reasons, from nostalgia to the thrill of tracking down rare or hard-to-find items. Many Hobbyco customers also enjoy the creativity that comes with customising their models.

A passionate aviation fan, for example, might look to add to their collection with any of the model aircraft available at Hobbyco, from the QANTAS B747400 Queen of the Skies to the RAAF Spitfire.

Fans of a particular TV or film franchise also might choose to show their passion by collecting relevant diecast models. Star Warsâ„¢ enthusiasts have a wide range of options available at Hobbyco, from the Darth Vader Key Chain to the limited edition Stormtrooper Bust.

Wherever your passions lie, there’s a diecast model available for you at Hobbyco.

      How to Clean Diecast Models

If you plan to proudly display your diecast models, you want them to look as shiny and new as possible. Unless you’re keeping them in a temperature-controlled glass display cabinet, dust and rust are going to have their effect.

The instructions you need to follow in cleaning your diecast model depend on the specific material used. The RAAF PBY5A Catalina Black Cat, for example, is a metal diecast model, meaning it should be cleaned with care. Start by dusting it off every week or so. For tougher grime and dirt, wash it off with a dishwashing detergent and dry it with a soft cloth. If there’s still dirt lingering on hard-to-reach areas, use a soft brush to scrub it away. Be sure not to use anything abrasive, such as steel wool; this will damage the finish of the model.

A plastic model, on the other hand, like the Alliance Airlines Embraer E190, should be cleaned with a damp cloth, being careful not to press too hard on the delicate surface. Try using mild soapy water to gently scrub the model and remove any remaining dirt or residue.

For both plastic and metal collectibles, be sure to spot-test any type of cleaning product before applying it to the entire model to ensure you don’t do any damage or strip the paint.
