What Is a Diecast Model?

How to Clean Diecast Models

If you plan to proudly display your diecast models, you want them to look as shiny and new as possible. Unless you’re keeping them in a temperature-controlled glass display cabinet, dust and rust are going to have their effect.

The instructions you need to follow in cleaning your diecast model depend on the specific material used. The RAAF PBY5A Catalina Black Cat, for example, is a metal diecast model, meaning it should be cleaned with care. Start by dusting it off every week or so. For tougher grime and dirt, wash it off with a dishwashing detergent and dry it with a soft cloth. If there’s still dirt lingering on hard-to-reach areas, use a soft brush to scrub it away. Be sure not to use anything abrasive, such as steel wool; this will damage the finish of the model. 

A plastic model, on the other hand, like the Alliance Airlines Embraer E190, should be cleaned with a damp cloth, being careful not to press too hard on the delicate surface. Try using mild soapy water to gently scrub the model and remove any remaining dirt or residue. 

For both plastic and metal collectibles, be sure to spot-test any type of cleaning product before applying it to the entire model to ensure you don’t do any damage or strip the paint.
