The legendary Spitfire fighter plane - a short-range, high-performance, single-seat aircraft - was introduced to the skies by the RAF in 1936, and went on to defend Britain against Luftwaffe attacks in 1940. Its speed and manoeuvrability meant it was beloved by pilots, serving as trainer, interceptor, fighter-bomber and carrier-based fighter between 1939 and 1945.
