For two months, from August to September 1991, Hungary's Malév leased an Ilyushin IL-62M from the then Czechoslovak CSA, which even received its own Hungarian registration, HA-LIA, for this short period. Due to the delayed delivery of a Boeing 767, the airline was forced to sign an agreement with CSA for the use of its OK-JBJ-registered Ilyushin for 200 flight hours – a total of ten flights between Budapest and Tokyo – including flight and ground crew, in order to be able to honor contracts already negotiated with Japanese tour operators. In the end, only a mere three flights to Japan were operated. The IL-62 also remained the only four-engine jet in Malév's fleet – therefore making this aircraft and its limited edition model release, a genuine rarity in many respects.
