Description

The 4th Fighter Group was activated Sept. 29, 1942 in Debden, England during World War II. The Eagle Squadrons consisted of American volunteers, until the 4th FG became part of the Army Air Corps and drafted members.

In 2017, the 4th Fighter Wing, based at Seymour Johnson AFB, celebrated its 75th anniversary. To help mark the occasion, F-15E Strike Eagle #87-0189, received this stunning new heritage paint scheme. Members of the 4th Equipment Maintenance Squadron fabrication flight worked for more than one month to complete the paint scheme in honor of the 4 FW's 75th anniversary.

Designed to meet US Air Force requirements for an air superiority fighter to replace the F-4 Phantom, the F-15 Eagle first flew on July 27, 1972. Following reviews of proposals, the United States Air Force selected McDonnell Douglas's design in 1969 to meet the service's need for a dedicated air superiority fighter. Since entering service in 1976, it is among the most successful modern fighters, with over 100 victories and no losses in aerial combat, with the majority of the kills by the Israeli Air Force.
