Why this kit matters

The Shaanxi KJ-500 is a Chinese airborne early warning and control (AEW&C) aircraft featuring a distinctive dorsal radome and AESA radar panels. It plays an important role in airspace monitoring, identification, and situational awareness for the People’s Liberation Army Air Force. Its design builds on earlier warning aircraft but adds modern electronics and improved detection capability.

In scale modelling, airborne radar aircraft are less commonly modelled than fighters or bombers, which makes this KJ-500 kit a refreshing subject. The size, detail, and combination of plastic, clear and PE parts give an opportunity to practise advanced modelling techniques - painting, masking, sanding, precise assembly - while ending up with a visually striking display. It’s well-suited to those who want something more than a basic build.

How to use it

Build using cutters or sprue-nippers, a hobby knife, files or sandpaper to clean up parts. Glue plastic parts together with plastic cement; use CA or PVA glue for photo-etched components if needed. Paint using model aircraft colours (e.g. radome white or grey, fuselage scheme etc.). Mask clear parts before painting. Apply decals carefully after painting. Once finished, display in a cabinet or on a shelf where the wingspan can be admired.

This is a plastic model kit. Assembly, paint, and glue are required. It is not a toy.
