Why this aircraft matters
The “Pikachu Jet” A321neo (registration B-18101) is Taiwan’s first Pokémon-themed aircraft, unveiled in September 2022 as part of the Pokémon Air Adventures campaign. The vibrant livery features eleven Pokémon characters, including Pikachu, Snorlax, Jigglypuff, and Togekiss, painted in a dawn-sky gradient with 36 different colours. It took more than three weeks to complete, showcasing a level of artistry rarely seen in commercial liveries. Shortly after rollout, the jet operated a charity micro-flight from Taoyuan, which sold out in nine minutes and raised funds for the Taiwan Fund for Children and Families.
Technically, the A321neo is powered by two Pratt & Whitney PurePower PW1100G-JM geared turbofan engines. Unlike traditional turbofans, these use a gearbox between the fan and low-pressure turbine, allowing each section to rotate at optimal speed. The result is an aircraft that uses up to 16% less fuel and produces 75% less noise than its predecessors—making it one of the quietest and most efficient narrow-bodies in service today.
