Why this kit matters
The Curtiss Hawk 81A-2 was the export designation for the P-40B fighter supplied to the American Volunteer Group, better known as the Flying Tigers. The AVG operated from bases in China and Burma during the early years of the Second World War, flying combat missions against Japanese forces.
Greg "Pappy" Boyington served with the AVG's 1st Pursuit Squadron before returning to US military service and later becoming a famous US Marine Corps fighter ace. The aircraft represented by this model connects his early combat career with the Flying Tigers and the wider air war in China and Burma in January 1942.
