Why this aircraft matters
Sally B is a Boeing B-17G Flying Fortress built at the Lockheed-Vega plant in Burbank, California. The USAAF accepted the aircraft as 44-85784 on 19 June 1945, too late for combat service in the Second World War. Ted White brought the aircraft to Britain in March 1975, beginning its long association with Duxford and the UK aviation community.
Sally B has been operated by B-17 Preservation as a flying memorial to the USAAF airmen who served in Europe. It is permanently based at the Imperial War Museum Duxford when not flying and continues to appear at airshows, memorial flypasts and commemorative events.
The aircraft also appeared in the 1989 film Memphis Belle. Its preservation has made Sally B a well-known part of the British airshow scene and an important surviving example of the B-17 Flying Fortress.
Livery and Finish
The model represents Sally B as G-BEDF with military serial 44-85784. The aircraft carries USAAF inspired markings and the distinctive black and yellow chequered pattern on the starboard inner engine cowling, a tribute to Ted White and his Harvard aircraft.
How to use it
Display the B-17G on your desk, shelf, cabinet or aviation diorama. The finished model includes a display cradle and base, so you do not need paint, glue or modelling tools.
This is a diecast model. It is fragile and not recommended for kids.
