Why this aircraft matters
Hail Columbia was the personal aircraft of Colonel John R. "Killer" Kane. After taking command of the USAAF 98th Bomb Group, Kane requested the aircraft back so he could lead the group during Operation Tidal Wave on 1 August 1943.
The mission sent 177 B-24 Liberators against the oil facilities at Ploiești, Romania. Hail Columbia led the 98th Bomb Group towards the Astra Română refinery at extremely low altitude. Kane released his bombs over the target before flying the heavily damaged Liberator across the Black Sea and Turkey to Cyprus for an emergency landing.
Kane received the Medal of Honor for his actions during Operation Tidal Wave. The aircraft and its crew became part of one of the best-known USAAF heavy bomber operations of the Second World War.
Livery and Finish
The model recreates Hail Columbia in its wartime USAAF appearance, including its aircraft serial 41-11825, period markings and distinctive nose artwork. The painted finish gives you a historically themed B-24D Liberator display without the need for decals or painting.
How to use it
Display the B-24D on your desk, shelf, cabinet or aviation diorama. The model arrives finished and ready to display, with no paint, glue or modelling tools required.
This is a diecast model. It is fragile and not recommended for kids.
