Revell 1/144 German Submarine Type XXIII
This new Revell release is a re-boxing of an ICM kit. Quite simple in terms of the number of parts, with nicely done surface detailing. The two halves of the hull and conning tower are the largest parts in the kit, then just a case of adding the fittings such as periscope etc on the conning tower, and the dive planes, rudder, propeller etc on the hull. The box art and instructions are in the new Revell stying, and they include colour painting guides for three options, with the appropriate transfers included as well.Option 1 is for U-2333, a training vessel with the 5th Submarine Flotilla at Kiel in December of 1944. The second is for U-2336, part of the 4th Submarine Flotilla in the North Sea in May 1945. The final option is for the one with the darkest overall colours, U-2363, as seen following capture by the Royal Navy, in June 1945.
A late war design, a small coastal U-Boat, armed with only two torpedoes, but able to stay submerged longer than most submarines with the high capacity electric motors. Designed to be built in sections, to disperse construction, and for the sections to be transportable by rail to an assembly yard. Just 6 went out on operations though a total of 61 were built. I believe 8 were sunk while over 30 were scuttled by their crews at the close of the war. Of the 20 that surrendered to the Allies, most of these were then scuttled, and one going to the Soviet Union. West Germany later raised a couple of the boats and re-commissioned them. They proved very capable, despite one sinking with heavy loss of life, and from them they developed the Type 206 which is still used to this day.
